Origin

drawn from the mark.

avian one pro begins with the Austin Avian mark. The mark is built on the Avian Grid, an equilateral lattice whose module, u, is 325 units on its 8534-unit artboard.

The typeface takes the same module. In the Bold, 1u is 140 font units, so the letters and the mark meet at exactly the same scale. The avianuno wordmark is set this way: 1u in the letters is 1u in the mark.

  • 2uStemThe Bold stem is the mark’s thin stroke, and the width of its bridge.
  • 7.3ux-heightIn the lockup the x-height band is centered on the mark’s axis, row 4267.
  • 4uSpacingThe word starts one thick stroke, 4u, from the mark’s rightmost point.

Proportion

row to row. sixty degrees.

Set the capitals on the mark’s base row and they rise exactly to its cap row. The cap height is 10u, the distance between the two rows the mark’s feet and shoulders were first aligned to.

The mark is two equilateral triangles, each 18u high, turned 180° and offset 2u into a hexagram. Its lattice runs at 0°, 60° and 120°. The diagonals of A, V and v run on that lattice: every leg meets the baseline at 60°, in every weight.

Detail

the dot is a shard.

The dot of the i and j is the mark’s right shard: a 90° heel, a 60° point and a 30° tip, each with the radius the mark gives it. It points up and rests on a level base, as the mark’s right shard rests on row 5892.

Its vertical leg continues the stem, so it reads as part of the letter. It floats u/φ above the stem, the same channel that separates the mark’s shards from its body. Only its size changes, set by the stem it crowns.

Corners

one corner law.

Every corner in the type takes the radius the mark uses for the same kind of corner. None of them is a plain arc. Each runs straight, then along an Euler spiral whose curvature grows in step with its length, then around a circular arc, then out along the mirrored spiral.

The spirals take 1/φ of the turn. Curvature rises and falls without a jump, so no corner reads as a kink, at any size.

the golden crown ladder.

Corners are sized by crown depth, δ, the distance from the sharp corner to the curve, in tiers that step down by φ. Structure decides the tier. Twelve corner systems were drawn and compared on the mark before this one, tuning K, was chosen.

Curves

between a circle and a square.

Round letters are superellipses, |x/a|n + |y/b|n = 1. An ellipse is n = 2 and a rectangle is n = ∞.

Measured on the Bold o, the outer contour follows n ≈ 2.21 and the counter n ≈ 2.34: just past the ellipse, with fuller shoulders. The o is 1.19 times as wide as it is tall.

  • Ellipse, n = 2
  • avian one pro, n ≈ 2.21
  • Rectangle, n = ∞

Weights

five weights. one golden step.

From Light to Heavy, each stem is √φ, about 1.272 times, the one before. Two steps make φ: Light to Medium, Regular to Bold. Bold is the anchor, with a stem of exactly 2u, and the variable font covers every weight from 300 to 800.

Process

how it was found.

  1. 2026.9

    the master.

Austin’s mark, drawn in Pixelmator Pro: an upright A and an inverted A, joined by a bridge and flanked by two shards.

  2. 2026.10

    the avian grid.

A mathematical rebuild on an equilateral lattice with a 325-unit module. Feet and shoulders aligned to the same rows. Thin legs widened to 2u, equal to the bridge.

  3. A–L

    twelve corner systems.

Nine systems, A to I, drawn on the same geometry. Three of them, Golden, Equal Crown and √3 Hierarchy, combined into the Golden Crown System and tried in three tunings. K, Golden Optical, was chosen.

  4. 2026.10.8

    the wordmark.

avianuno, set in avian one pro bold at the mark’s scale, its i crowned with the mark’s shard and every corner on the mark’s law.

  5. avian one pro 1.0

    the typeface.

avian one pro: five weights from Light to Heavy, a variable weight axis from 300 to 800, and round dots as a stylistic set.
